Mayne Island Embraces Electric
Transportation
Wesley Mulvin of Southern Gulf Electric is driving green
on Mayne Island, a newly designated Neighborhood
Zero Emission Vehicle (NZEV) area. Mayne Island’s
new designation is the result of a Ministry of Transport engineering study that
determined that Mayne Island is safe for NZEV’s making it the first
unincorporated area in British
Columbia to allow NZEV’s on all roads. Anyone on Mayne Island
who chooses a NZEV as their mode of green transportation is able to apply for a
permit with the Ministry of Transportation and it will be quickly issued at no
charge.
Mr. Mulvin purchased his NZEV, Might-E Truck, from Canadian Electric Vehicles Ltd. of Errington, BC. The Might-E Truck is a work vehicle with a
speed of up to 40 km per hour. The truck
can carry a load of up to 2,000 pounds and can be customized for specific
applications.
Mr. Mulvin drives his Might-E Truck approx 30 km per
day and his choice of clean transportation is well received by his neighbors on
Mayne Island where he has installed public
charging stations two of which are at the Home Hardware and the Agricultural
Hall. The charging stations are
identified with signs that read “Electric Vehicle Parking and Charging Station”
- signs that we will see more of as we take the necessary steps to greening our
neighborhoods.
